Alexander Luthor spent billions funding weapons that fuelled wars, labs that created Kaiju-like monsters, and he funded scientists to experiment on metahumans to make an army. LuthorCorp's little side project, known as Project Cadmus, harvested Kryptonian DNA (cloned Superman, Project KR) and obtained alien technology from crash sites.
In a brazen attempt to kill and end the very idea of Superman, Lex Luthor nearly destroyed the universe. His machine tore rifts between worlds, universes and time... He was defeated, but the damage had been done, the extent of which was unknown.
The world celebrated this victory, thanks to Justice League International. When the dust settled, in the midst of rebuilding, the numbers came in... thousands of people were displaced, not just from their broken homes, but they were from other worlds.
Tears in the fabric of reality itself appeared around the world. These tears continuously open and close randomly, and are presently monitored by Mister Terrific.
