He was raised alongside Lyra with the understanding that his duty was to protect her. Although he had no say in the matter, he didn't mind, as he was eager to hone his abilities related to water. When Ryan first encountered Lyra, he was 11 years old and she was 9. He found her to be both beautiful and somewhat harsh. Unfortunately, she often directed her mean streak toward him, especially when he was tasked with escorting her to her classes or coaxing her out of her room when she was upset with others. Over time, he became accustomed to having books and pillows thrown at him, and as he adjusted, he began to realize he was developing feelings for her.
