Chapter 14

The news of the destruction of the Green Tower and its Mage spread like wildfire, and soon all the land was abuzz with it. No one knew what had actually happened and the rumors ran from an invading army to another Mage giving battle. Rathamaru was forgotten, thought to be just one more of the casualties of the Tower.

One month after Balgor fell, a stranger walked into the forbidding land of the fire clan. He was tall and dressed in white silks, his dark hair in a long braid, and his visage fair. He asked for the home of Yuri and was directed to a cave on the far side of the village.

Rathamaru stood there -- trying to remember his former life, but it had faded with time. A tall man stood in front of the cave's mouth, staring back, and finally walked toward him.

"What can I do for you, stranger?"

"Are you called Yuri?"

"Yes, that is my name."

"Did you have a son at one time?"

Yuri hitched in his breath and stared at the young man. "Who are you?" He whispered, his voice caught in his throat.

"I think I am your son. But my memory fades and I am not sure. I am called Rathamaru now, a name given to me by JungSo."

"Yuli?" Yuri looked into the golden eyes and suddenly saw his little boy inside. "My son!" He embraced him tightly and called to his mate, "Fara, come quickly."

A woman, reminding Rathamaru very much of Calfor, rushed to his side and added her arms to the mix. "My son! My son!" She cried.

Rathamaru spent many months with his family, and his father taught him how to control his power, and gave him a long sword, the family heirloom. Finally the day came when he deemed it was time to leave.

"Where will you go, son?"

"I don't know. I have seen nothing of the world and would like travel it for a while. I will return every so often. Never fear, I will not forget you again."

For many years, Rathamaru wandered the lands behind the mountains, using his power and his sword to help the weak against the strong. His name became known to all, but a few of the old clans leader still remembered the beautiful boy standing next to the Green Mage. But the look in those sharp gold eyes stayed their tongue and they said nothing.

He also attracted much attention because of his beauty -- this time not only the attention of males, but also demon maidens. And he soon learned to enjoy the pleasures of the fairer sex.

As time passed, Rathamaru made his way to the mountains and crossed them, finding fertile fields and a new type of being called humans. They were so frail and helpless. He walked through the field and forests, marveling at the beauty of the land. This was far from the harsh lands beyond the mountains.

"I could live in this land happily." He mused to himself. But there was no way for that to happen. These lands belonged to the humans and they feared and hated demonkind.

Suddenly, in the distance he heard the tolling of a bell and went towards the sound to investigate.

As he slowly walked down the road toward the bell, something collided with him and he turned to find a small girl sprawled on the ground. She had run into him and fallen down. He reached down to help her up, and she screamed at him to stop.

And he obeyed -- caught in a spell stronger than any Mage could ever imagine -- by a little girl named Amara. And strangely enough, Rathamaru found the peace that he had been seeking in her spell.
